Jeugdfilatelie Nederland, the Dutch youth philatelic association has kindly given us permission
to make its publication "ABC of Stamp Collecting" available at www.filatelia.net. Hopefully
this information will be useful to a large number of collectors, especially to those who have
just started collecting, but also to others who wish to learn more about this hobby in English.

If you have any questions concerning youth philately in relation to FIP (Fédération Internationale
de Philatélie), please contact Mr Cees Janssen, e-mail ceesjans@wxs.nl

The website of Jeugdfilatelie Nederland is at http://www.jeugdfilatelie.nl/

Our thanks also go to Coert Lodewijks for providing us his collection of Dutch stamps and
thereby enabling us to scan many of the stamps included in the book.

INTRODUCTION

In about the year 1950, the board of the Dutch Youth Philatelic Association found out that
the young stamp collectors in the Netherlands wanted more information about their hobby.
So the board started writing letters about the subject, which were distributed among the
youth leaders; these taught the contents to their pupils.

The letters were primarily intended to help the youth leaders. They were called: "The ABC
of Stamp Collecting"

The separate letters were such a success, that the board decided to publish them in the form
of a book in 1967. This book also had the title "The ABC of Stamp Collecting".

By now, that first book has grown into a series of three:

"ABC, part 1" gives basic information about stamp collecting.

"ABC, part 2" tells about making a collection of stamps which will be accepted at an exhibition.

"ABC, part 3" deals with the differences in philately.

These books have proven to be very valuable in learning boys and girls to enjoy the hobby
of philately. During the meetings of their stamps club, the various chapters of these books
are being discussed and followed up.

Colleagues from many countries, who learned about our series "The ABC of Stamp
Collecting", have been asking for a translation in English, which they can adapt for their own
purpose.

Such an English translation is finally here, and mostly because of the effort of young Antoine
(Twan) Oomis, who is fifteen year old and who translated the Dutch book into English. I also
want to thank messrs C. Jansen, H. Kolner, J. Wiegers, J. Groeneveld, M. Madesker, and
A. Oomis for their contributions. Mr. Jozeph de Lange, the former chairman of our
organization, edited the English version and took care of the final wording.

This English translation of "The ABC of Stamp Collecting" is presented on a 3¼ inch disc,
together with a print-out of the English version and a sample of the Dutch book. The
philatelic organizations in foreign countries who wish to publish a similar book are free to
use the text to make their own book, which is adapted to their needs. If necessary, they
can translate the English text into the language of their own.

Such a book should be adapted to the special situation in each country; changes should be
made in the text where such is appropriate, and Dutch situations and stamps should be
replaced by those in the foreign country.

I wish my colleagues success with this work and I hope that their effort will find its way to
many enthusiastic young stamp collectors, who then will enjoy the great hobby of philately
even more.

June 1999

Dr. C.J. van Kempen, chairman of Youth Philately Netherlands.
